Let's start with the basics...
린디합에 대해서 얘기하기 전에
기본적인 이야기를 먼저 해볼게요
아마 블로그에서 이 글을 읽고 계시는 분들은 아주 많이 들어 보셨을 가사입니다
"If don't mean a thing, If it ain't got that swing~"

Before we talk about The Lindyhop,
Let’s start with the basics:
I’m almost certain that everyone reading this has heard of the phrase “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing”.
So...
What is “Swing”?
Firstly, what is “Swing dance”?
“Swing dance” refers to a variety of dances danced to jazz music. It is an umbrella term for all types of jazz dances such as the Charleston (both partnered and solo), the Lindyhop/Jitterbug, East Coast Swing, West Coast (Western) Swing, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Jive, and Boogie Woogie, and peabody. A similar example would be “Latin dance” which is an umbrella term for Salsa, Cha Cha, Bachata, Samba, Merengue etc.
Of course, before these dances ...
… First came the music!
We all know that there are different types of jazz music.
Swing music is...
jazz music, but for dancing.
Swing music (or just “Swing”) dominated the 1930s and 40s and developed from jazz in the 20s by the African American and Creole communities in the Southern parts of America. It was a kind of fusion between African and European music; born from just experimentation and just playing around with music.
Jazz is just experimentation with music. At this time, other types of (classical) music tended to be more constrained and rigid whereas jazz was not; jazz allowed for a lot of improvisation and creativity in the music.
So, simply put, swing music evolved from jazz music that started in New Orleans. Some well-known musicians of the time are the likes of Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, and Jean Goldkette (to name a few).
Some other genres that use a “swing rhythm” include country, jazz and blues, and sometimes rock, funk and hip-hop too.
Swing music is simple, has clear melodies, and a strong beat which creates a perfect rhythm; a rhythm that makes you want to get up and dance!
When there is music, we dance!
As we’ve mentioned above, there are so many types of swing dance. “Swing dance” is a term loosely used to call any dance that is danced to swing music. Swing styles and genres are all adapted from different regions of the United States. As we all know, in those days no internet existed, so the radio, newspapers and word-of-mouth were the main source of information for most people. Knowing this, we can guess that the music reached the people first, then whatever regional dance styles they knew were adapted in order to be danced to the new trend of swing music.

***Fun Fact: Swing musicians were nicknamed “Cats” in the 1920s. Like cats, swing musicians
were aloof, always out at night and always landed on their feet. (In English, to land on your feet is an idiom meaning to have success or luck after lots of trial and error.) Actually, a lot of slang that we still use today originated from the swing music era. Some examples include, "cool cat", "hep cat" ("hep" means "cool" but over the years it has changed to "hip" e.g. "hip-hop"), "chicken" (meaning "coward") etc.
